The Ins and Outs
of Singing Lessons Online
Online education is an ever growing field, but the
idea of taking singing lessons online sounds odd to many people. After all, the Internet is thought of as a
rather impersonal environment. However, some creative educators have learned to bridge this gap in many ways.
Further, they can provide singing lessons online at a much lower cost than your local voice
teacher.
The selection of an online voice teacher is similar to
the selection of a local voice teacher. But, before you make such a selection you need to have a clear set of
vocal goals. You need to determine what type of music you want to sing. You need to think about your
performance venues. You need to think about what level of proficiency you wish to reach.
There are plenty of options for singing lessons
online, but your selection will be predicated on your goals. For example, if you just want to be competent
enough to sing in the church choir once per week, you may not need a comprehensive course that includes music
history and music theory. However, you will still find it beneficial to choose a program that teaches you
about such music theory topics as pitch and resonance, and also about such musical performance topics as
musical interpretation and stage presence.
Think about whether or not your performances will be
done on a stage with a microphone or in an open environment, unaided by voice reproduction instruments and
amplifiers. Will you be singing with accompaniment or a cappella? Singing in different environments involves
very different skills.
You'll find that most singing lessons online are
taught as courses, rather than as the individual lessons you would get from a private instructor. They are
put together using a variety of audio, video, and text formats. They should also offer some type of
specialized online support.
Experiencing Singing Lessons Online
You'll begin the typical course by learning all about
the human voice, and how to maximize it's usage with proper posture, breathing, and muscular support. You'll
also learn about tone and pitch.
Your first practical lessons will involve exercises
you do that reinforce correct use of your body and accurate pitch production. This is the part of taking
singing lessons online or offline that usually separates the serious students from the dabblers. Those
serious about honing their skills are eager to master this information, while dabblers tend to get to the
singing of melodies as soon as possible. The more you learn in this early phase, the farther you'll be able
to go as a singer. But, if you're taking the course online, you won't have anyone pushing you to study hard.
So if you think you might be a dabbler, you may want to start with an offline voice teacher before taking
singing lessons online.
Of course, the main difference between singing lessons
online and offline is that you get immediate feedback when you have an offline voice teacher. If you take
your lessons online, you'll have to record your voice and try to make the corrections yourself by comparing
yourself to the recordings of what you should sound like. To benefit from singing lessons online, you have to
be able to judge yourself objectively.
